How to Do a Local Job Search

By Jay Moncliff Many people are out there looking for a job. A local job search can often be difficult. But did you know you can do a local job search right from your own home? You can even do a local job search without even having to get up from your chair. How do you do a local job search? What’s the best way to do a local job search? Let’s go over some of the methods. The first way people usually do a local job search is from a newspaper. This is not always the best way to do a local job search, but it is commonly used. The first way to do this local job search is to get your local newspaper. You can either have it delivered to your home or purchase it a grocery store or gas station. You then open your newspaper to the classified section and start your local job search. The jobs are sectioned off by their designated fields such as: legal, medical, labor, drivers, sales, etc. Before you start this local job search, you may want to have a resume already made. The most popular form of a local job search is to go online and do a local job search. There are several websites that offer a local job search. I find the easiest website to use for a local job search to be careerbuilders.com. At this website you begin your local job search by first creating a resume. You can either copy and paste a resume you have already created or you can use the websites free resume builder. You can save up to 5. Next you begin the local job search. First select your city and state. You then select how far away you are willing to work from your zip code. Next you select the categories of job interest and click “enter.” Soon you will have tons of jobs listed from your local job search. You can then select jobs you are interested in and automatically send them your resume. It is the easiest way to do a local job search. Careerbuilder.com even emails you daily with jobs that match the local job search you did on the website. The last local job search website you may be interested in is monster.com. This website is probably the most popular, but not as user friendly. It is very similar to careerbuilder.com except that they do not send out email alerts for jobs you may be interested in. Finding a great job is very important. Finding the best job is not always easy. Use the information you have just been given wisely. With it you should have no trouble finding the perfect job. [31st July 1974] Consumer Credit Act 1974 is a consumer protection law in the UK which requires certain businesses to obtain consumer credit licenses. This Act protects any individual who receives credit up to 25,000. All appeals under the Consumer Credit Act need to be made to the Office of Fair Trading. This Act governs personal loans and other credit agreements. Gist of the provisions of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 Any business offering credit agreements must obtain a credit license from the Office of Fair Trading, attaining which your business becomes a licensed credit broker The customer must be aware of all the details of the agreement including interest rates Customers must be provided with the exact details of the transaction including cash purchase price, details on how the credit price works out, all the monthly costs and what the final cost of credit is Consumer Credit Act 1974 requires: All agreements will be in writing Full written details of the true interest rate (APR) should be quoted Cooling-off period (which starts on the day customer signs, it varies for different goods and services) should be allowed during which borrowers might change their minds and cancel agreements How does the Consumer Credit Act 1974 protect the consumer? Consumer Credit Act regulates all those who are involved in offering credit. It enables the consumers to gain a better understanding of the nature of the agreements they are getting into. Consumers tend to get lured by attractive interest rates and freebies offered by lenders but this Act enables the consumers to make the best informed choice. Consumer Credit Act also controls and regulates the activities of those who can provide credit under this Act. It also incorporates what steps a lender must take in case of default. This is not just limited to banks but also traders who offer goods on hire purchase and the various transactions they undertake. This Act lays down rules which covers the form and content of all agreements, credit advertising, method of calculating Annual Percentage Rate (APR) and the procedures which will be adopted in the event of early settlements, defaults or even termination. Consumer Credit Act 2006 Consumer Credit Act 2006 is the most significant change since Consumer Credit Act 1976. Avoid Settling for Less Than What You Need and Want While Searching for Your Life Partner

By Janice D. Bennett, Ph.D. Lets say that youre out there in the dating scene meeting members of the opposite sex online and in person, making conscious decisions about who to date, and learning more about who you are and what you need and want in a life partner relationship. And then you get to the third or fourth date with someone. Thats when you start noticing how some aspects of your dating partner dont fit with the vision you have of your ideal mate. For many singles, confronting this fork in the road toward finding a life partner relationship is a major dating dilemma. Thats because taking an unanticipated turn onto an unknown road toward finding a life partner can be confusing and scary. This is the point when Ive seen many singles quickly, and even carelessly, reject someone who could have made a suitable partner. The challenge at this stage of dating is to look long and hard at the actual live person youre dating and determine what aspects of your ideal relationship vision are mandatory, and which are negotiable. Truthfully, I dont suggest that you do this on your own. It takes a coach or a mentor, an objective person whom you trust, to help you determine the pros and cons of the person youre dating. Without help, you run the risk of listening to that little voice in your head saying, Hey, break up with this person. S/he doesnt match up! Youll only be settling for less! I believe that settling for less inaccurately describes the experience of singles having to compromise some of the characteristics they seek in their ideal mate. To best explain the choices one faces when confronting a fork in the road, here are a couple of examples: George feels comfortable and happy when he is with Julia, and sees himself having a future with her, IF ONLY she would be more intellectually stimulating. George has a keen interest in current events and looks forward to reading the news every day. He has tried to interest Julia in discussing news and events with him, and while she is familiar with the world around her, it is not at the level that George would like. On the other hand, they share similar family backgrounds, outdoor interests and spiritual lifestyle goals. They have a good time together, can converse about a variety of subjects, and get along well. George also finds her attractive, but still wonders if he can marry a woman who does not stimulate him intellectually. On the other hand, he has yet to meet anyone else that he enjoys being with as much, overall. I would suggest to George that he try and view Julia as the intelligent woman she truly is, despite not having as keen an interest in current events as he. I would encourage him to focus on their shared interests and goals, and to imagine Julia as a partner in life rather than solely as an intellectual cohort. I would, of course, remind him that not all people are perfect, yet they can and should be able to grow. I would strongly recommend that since he is attracted to her and enjoys her company, he may already have sufficient information with which to know that they can create a life together. Anna has gone out with Michael for two months, having met him on an online dating website. She experienced him as nice and attentive, and came away from each date with the confirmation that he was a decent and honest man, with whom she shared similar spiritual and life goals. While she was able to visualize being married to him, she did not feel any excitement about him, or excitement about having a future with him. Anna wondered if it was reasonable to have a marriage that did not have much passion if Michael was, in fact, a nice and kind man. But she wasnt sure if her doubts about him were reason enough to break up either. I see Annas situation differently than Georges. George is pretty clear and confident about who he is and what he needs; Anna isnt as in touch with her needs, which is the reason why shes confused about Michael. Anna believes that she should marry a man solely because hes kind, honest and decent. This reflects a lack of self-esteem on Annas part, because if she believed she deserved passion and excitement in a relationship, then she would break up with Michael, no matter how nice and decent he was, and continue searching. Negotiating a fork in the road essentially requires that you have sufficient knowledge about yourself and your needs. Having this knowledge will help you decide what turns to take should you disqualify someone because you know you need more than what s/he is capable of giving? Or, since you know that no one is perfect, should you be flexible? George, in the example above, was challenged to see how his dating partner, Julia, met the majority of his needs for a life partner. This meant that he turn onto the road requiring him to be flexible. Once Anna (in the second example) realizes that she deserves to have passion and excitement in a relationship, shell turn onto the road disqualifying Michael, which will eventually lead her closer to finding her life partner. The road to finding your life partner is filled with many opportunities to take turns onto other roads that can still get you to where you want to go. If you focus on what is missing in a relationship, then you may be setting yourself up to feel that you are settling for less. But if you choose instead to look at the bigger picture, to see your goal in the distance, and be flexible about turning onto some side roads along the way, you may get to your destination — finding your life partner — that much sooner. Another key constituent is the APR, which is charged by the lender for lending an amount to the borrower. Annual percentage rate is decided by taking into account the total cost of interest and other charges involved such as brokers fees etc. Last but not least is the repayment schedule. It refers to the time taken to repay the loan amount. This can vary depending upon the amount of loan being borrowed. Sometimes, the lender can also offer the credit insurance. Aluminium - The History Behind The Metal

By Colin Croucher Minerals containing aluminium are very difficult to decompose. In 1825, a Danish scientist H.C.Oersted discovered that metallic potassium could be used to chemically reduce aluminium from one of its compounds. The cost of aluminium in the very early days was around 250.00 English pounds per kilo to produce, much more than gold. Even Napoleon was reported to have been privileged to use Aluminium knives and forks when eating. French nobility had to be content with silver or gold tableware? Metallurgists, Hall (America) & Heroult, (France) discovered the process for extracting aluminium from the ore of bauxite in the year of 1886, but the metal remained an expensive commodity until the beginning of the 1900s. The first & second world wars, saw a huge demand for this strong, light & versatile metal, particularly in the manufacture of aircraft. Modern technology has pushed the annual production of Al second only to iron in world production terms. The ore of aluminium is called bauxite, it contains aluminium oxide Al203. Bauxite ore itself cannot be reduced to metal by heating it with coke as with cast iron, for the simple reason that Al atoms are too firmly combined with oxygen atoms to be detached by carbon. An electrolytic process is used to decompose the bauxite and release the Aluminium, which consumes about 91 mega joules of electricity to produce I. Kg of Al metal, so large amounts of cheap electrical power must be available to the smelters. Most of the world’s aluminium was produced in the USA, Canada, & Norway. However, Australia also has vast deposits of bauxite, and has large Smelters situated near the major power producers in the country. This abundance of aluminium supply has had the effect of producing a readily available stockpile of scrap aluminium, where it is not difficult for the hobby foundry worker to easily break the metal down to manageable sizes, which can then be melted in small hobby gas or electric furnaces. Crude pig iron is purified or converted to steel by blowing oxygen through it, Which burns out the impurities, this is not possible with aluminium as the metal would simply burn away, and leave you with useless impurities. A chemical process is first used to purify the bauxite, then the pure aluminium oxide is decomposed by electrolysis. Aluminium oxide has a very high melting point, it is mixed with another aluminium mineral called cryolite, to form an electrolyte, which will melt at a low temperature. Next time you are breaking down a piece of scrap aluminium to place into your crucible to melt, spare a thought for the journey it has travelled before you acquired it! Today’s technology enables the semi skilled home hobby foundry worker to produce low cost Aluminium castings for all kinds of purposes, but there are things that you must learn about, and equipment you must acquire or build before the metal casting journey can begin. To begin to explore and understand what this intriguing metal craft is all about, you are invited to visit our hobby foundry web site. PH Balance and Digestive Disorders: Breaking the Vicious Circle

By Maria Dolgova If you suffer from acid indigestion or acid reflux, chances are your body is unable to rid itself of toxic substances. A high acid level in your upper digestive tract is an indication that acid levels are high elsewhere in your body too. In a vicious circle, acid waste creates more acid waste. Its important to take immediate measures to reduce your acid level throughout your body, to achieve a more balanced body pH level. If acid waste continues to take up residence in your bodys organs, you will be increasingly susceptible to degenerative diseases such as diabetes, arthritis and cardiovascular disease. Only by neutralizing and then eliminating the acids in your body can you begin the process of healing your digestive tract. THE RISK The primary symptom of acid reflux is obvious to those who have it. During the digestive process, acid flows up into the throat and causes a burning sensation. This is caused by a breakdown in the valve that separates the stomach from the esophagus. Its an indication that the acid-alkaline balance in the digestive tract has been disrupted. Unless that balance is restored, any attempt to treat or correct the acid reflux problem will provide nothing more than short- term relief. The accumulation of acid in the digestive tract is often the result of eating the wrong types of food. Acid is not caused only by excessive consumption of junk food. Anything processed or overloaded with additives can upset the acid- alkaline balance in the digestive system. Even foods that you think are healthy can be highly acidic. In a digestive tract thats already out of balance, something as simple as cooking your food can lead to further problems. Cooking destroys natural enzymes in the food that assist with digestion. When your digestive system is unable to produce the necessary enzymes for digestion, the loss of natural enzymes makes the problem worse. Lifestyle also contributes to digestive disorders. Stress intensifies hyperacidity. Blood is diverted away from the stomach to the heart, lungs and muscles for the fight or flight response. The stomach is deprived of necessary oxygen and nutrients and cannot form sufficient enzymes for proper digestion. THE DAMAGE Acid reflux irritates and swells the mucous lining in the throat, esophagus and stomach, which disrupts the digestive process. The irritation can form ulcers. The acid-alkaline balance of the digestive tract is also upset, leading to further accumulation of acid. The intestines are affected even more severely. Unlike digestion in the stomach, the intestinal digestive process is meant to be alkaline, not acidic. Therefore, the intestinal walls do not have a thick mucous lining that protects from acid as the stomach does. The intestinal walls are meant to facilitate the absorption of nutrients into the bloodstream. When acid inflames the intestinal walls, it disrupts the acid/alkaline balance of the digestive tract. It kills off the friendly bacteria that aid in digestion friendly bacteria that are no longer present in much of our food supply. The intestinal inflammation also slows down peristalsis, the contraction of the colon that pushes food along the intestinal tract. Undigested food particles putrefy and lead to greater accumulation of acid. The liver and gallbladder are also affected. When the liver becomes overloaded with acidic waste that it can’t eliminate, it crystallizes bile and acid waste into gallstones. The gallbladder has difficulty releasing bile, which inhibits proper digestion and further slows peristalsis. Acid levels continue to rise, the liver becomes damaged, and all other body organs become vulnerable to deterioration. Degenerative disease sets in. THE BENEFITS OF A BALANCED pH The best way to restore pH balance to your digestive tract is to eliminate foods that cause acid reflux. This also means identifying and eliminating foods that cause an allergic response. Certain raw foods and whole foods and the right combination of vegetable juices can heal the digestive tract lining and eliminate further accumulation of acid waste. They can heal and prevent the formation of ulcers. Supplements that replace the friendly bacteria and the digestive enzymes destroyed by acid can also help. Learn how you can bring your body back to balance and relieve digestive disorders. Get 3 free alkaline recipes that will help you restore pH balance in your body. Visit pH balance website. Burn Fat 24 Hours a Day - Increase Your Metabolic Rate

By Ted Frazer Fast or Slow Metabolism is a word that most dieters are well familiar with. People who battle with their weight are often thought of as having a slow metabolism, where those fortunate individuals who seemingly can eat anything they wish and not gain weight are believed to have a fast metabolism. The goal then for most dieters is the pursuit of any strategy that will increase the metabolic rate (MR) and thereby greatly assist with the losing and maintaining of weight. Before examining ways of adjusting the MR, lets first define metabolism Metabolism - Defined Metabolism is defined in the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary as The sum of the chemical processes in a cell or organism, by which complex substances are synthesised and broken down, and growth and energy production sustained. A commonly referred to term is BMR the Basal Metabolic Rate i.e. the minimum number of calories required to keep us alive. There are also other terms, such as RMR Resting Metabolic Rate which is basically the rate of our metabolism during the day whilst performing standard daily tasks (i.e. standard daily activity); SMR Sleeping Metabolic Rate the rate of our metabolism whilst we are at sleep. Several factors can affect our MR, but one important aspect that can have significant bearing is the amount of active lean muscle tissue we have on our bodies. When compared to fat, active lean tissue (muscle) requires more calories to sustain itself at rest, and therefore, our musculature or percentage of muscle tissue and how it is exercised - can be seen as an effective pathway to adjusting the MR. As we age, we usually tend to lose muscle mass, and similarly, our metabolism gets slower. As a example comparison, a 70 year-old man would need to do a significant amount of daily activity to burn off the same amount calories that a 26 year old man would burn at rest. Hence, to prevent gaining fat weight as we age, we need to either 1) Decrease our daily caloric intake, or 2) Increase our daily physical activity - i.e.exercise 3) Maintain or even increase our muscle mass (i.e. through resistance training exercise such as weight training). How we eatwhat we do The MR plays a major role in the maintaining and losing of weight (bodyfat) with the objective being to adopt strategies that elevate the MR and more importantly keep the MR elevated. There are 2 main options to adjusting the MR 1) Through adjusting of eating patterns 2) Through adjusting of activity levels Lets review both: Adjusting of eating patterns There are many classic analogies that are used to explain how eating affects ones metabolism. One analogy uses a motorcars engine and fuel consumption: Motorcar Analogy: A motorcar uses 3 litres of petrol to travel a distance of 25 KM. If the motorcar was allowed 1.5 Litres of petrol and still needed to travel 25 KM, the engine of the vehicle would need to be tuned in such a way so as to deliver the same driving performance on half the fuel. Our metabolisms are thought to work in the same way. When we suddenly reduce our daily caloric intake in an attempt to lose weight, our bodies react by slowing down its MR so that the caloric fuel required to perform the same daily tasks is utilized or burned at a slower rate. Referring to our motorcar analogy again, if the same motorcar was given 3 litres of fuel after being retuned, the car would travel 25KM and still have 1.5 litres remaining. Similarly, if someone who had been on a reduced calorie diet resumed their previous high-calorie eating pattern, their bodies would store the extra calories as fat, as their now slower metabolisms would not be accustomed to the additional calories. The eating and digesting of food actually requires the body to utilize caloric energy. To increase ones metabolism, it is recommended that we eat small meals every 3 hrs to keep the metabolism elevated. Where this may help elevate metabolic levels, it is a somewhat limited approach and is best used in conjunction with other strategies. Also, one needs to differentiate between total calories and amount of food consumed. At each time of eating, we are also consuming calories, so we need to ensure that each meal is relatively lower in calories. It would not be wise to eat frequent high-calorie meals and hope that the incremental increase in metabolism would be sufficient to burn the relatively higher number of calories that would be consumed over the day. Observing the total calories consumed in a day, is then still a critical factor in managing ones weight, and although dividing our individual daily caloric allowance into regular small meals may perhaps be better to ensuring a higher metabolic rate, by itself, this approach is limited in ensuring an optimum level of sustained, elevated MR. In addition to the frequency of our eating, there are also other eating strategies thought to assist in increasing ones metabolism, such as the including of certain foods believed to have a positive effect on the metabolic rate. Green Tea; Chilli (and other hot foods) are 2 examples of foods that are believed to stoke the furnace so to speak and assist in enhancing our metabolic rates. However, although the structuring of our eating patterns can have a positive effect on the MR, as mentioned, this approach in itself can be limited and needs to be done in conjunction with other strategies such as adjusting of activity levels. Adjusting Activity Levels Most people believe that taking up some form of exercise is all that is required to adjust their metabolisms and manage their weight. Endurance activities such as running or jogging, walking or cycling being the generally preferred options. However, these activities, performed in a steady-state, endurance-style fashion do little to elevate the metabolic rate for an extended period. Although these activities may be healthful and enjoyable, improve circulation and burn calories, they do little to sustain an elevated metabolic rate. In fact, it is now believed that endurance style exercise activities may actually lead to a drop in elevated metabolic rates! This is a most crucial and controversial point that needs to be clarified in more detail. Although our MR is mostly genetically pre-determined, when we look at increasing the MR, we should be looking to do so for extended periods. A sustained MR will then assist in burning more calories at rest for longer periods of time. This is effectively achievable though a combination of 2 key factors 1) increasing our functional muscle mass 2) utilizing of muscle mass in higher-intensity forms of exercise. If we have higher levels of muscle on our bodies, our MR will increase. We will in effect be burning more calories whilst at rest. Also, when engaging in exercise, the contracting of additional muscle mass will burn relatively more calories during that activity. Example: Someone performs an exercise activity for 15 minutes and burns 150 calories. If that person adds 3 Kg of muscle to their frame and performs the same activity for the same period of time, they will burn more calories doing so. Doing lessburning more Higher-intensity forms of exercise places higher demands on our metabolic systems, and keep our metabolisms elevated for far longer periods. When people talk about effective forms of calorie-burning exercise, they usually only think of how many calories are utilized whilst actually performing the activity. Typically, running is seen as an ideal calorie burning activity because running is seen to burn a relatively high number of calories. But where endurance running may burn significant calories during the activity, it has 2 negatives: 1) Your metabolic rate drops relatively quickly once you stop an endurance activity, with your metabolism returning to normal almost an hour after stopping. 2) Endurance activities are generally catabolic i.e. it creates a reduction in lean muscle mass. As we have discussed, RMR is affected by the amount of muscle mass hence a drop in muscle mass, will lead to a corresponding drop in MR. Hence, if you examine most marathon runners, although they usually have lower levels of bodyfat, they are also usually relatively thin, with relatively low levels of lean muscle mass. Muscleand intensity However, this does not mean that the objective is to suddenly aspire to becoming a bodybuilder although, bodybuilding or specifically, musclebuiliding - certainly does increase the MR and RMR. However, if we are looking to elevate and sustain our MR, then wherever possible we should look to intensity when exercising: Intensity Vs Endurance Intensity is a key factor to increasing our MR through exercise. To exercise with intensity, usually means working harder to constantly push or overload ones muscular and cardiovascular system. Now naturally this approach needs to be done VERY CAREFULLY, with intensity levels being increased GRADUALLY - especially if one is not used to harder forms of exercise. Also, if you are presently significantly overweight, it may be easier on your body to first lose some of the weight through corrective eating before attempting to overload your body with a higher-intensity exercise program (It is therefore perhaps a better route to use a corrective eating to lose gained weight and higher intensity exercise to assist in preventing gaining weight). Training with higher levels of intensity usually requires a higher level of muscular recruitment (i.e. the muscles working at a higher capacity as well as more muscles working together) and energy, and similarly requires the cardio system (heart & lungs) to work harder. Not only does higher intensity training burn relatively more calories than endurance or lower-intensity exercise, but of greater importance, it causes the MR to remain elevated for relatively longer periods after exercising. An effective form of intensity training is Interval Training alternating brief periods of intensity, with periods of recuperation. Example: Running Intervals (Beginner) Walk for 2 minutes Jog for 10-20 secs Walk for 2 minutes Jog for 10-20 secs Repeat until 15 minutes is reached Example: Running Intervals (Advanced) Walk for approx 30 Secs Jog for approx 45 secs - 1 minute Sprint or run fast for 30-45 secs Repeat 10-12 times (or until 20 minutes is reached) This approach can naturally be applied to any form of endurance activity, and can be varied based on current level of fitness. The key aspect is to gradually increase the intensity, by shortening the rest periods &/increasing the periods of intensity. One can also increase intensity through increasing the load placed on the muscles i.e. Hills; Weighted belts. For very advanced training, one can combine the 2 i.e. interval training with added resistance - however, this places significant demands on the body and should only be considered once a high level of fitness has been attained. Now naturally, higher intensity training needs to be briefer in duration, and, due to the fact that it places a higher demand on the body, also requires relatively longer rest periods between sessions. This not only allows for a sufficient recovery period, but also allows the muscles involved to repair and grow stronger so as to be able to handle the higher intensity loads. Resistance or weight training should also form a part of ones exercise program although, again, this need not necessarily mean heavy weight training and can include a wide range of activities. Bodyweight exercises, as well as a variety of different resistance exercises can be done with higher levels of intensity so as to place higher demands on the body that will result in a sustained elevated MR. Higher intensity strategies such as Supersetting (doing 2 exercises in succession with minimal rest in between); Giant setting (doing more than 2 exercises in succession with minimal rest in between) and Progressive resistance loads (adding more resistance) are 3 approaches that can be used to increase intensity. The key to remember is more intense levels of activity done for briefer periods is a far better approach to increasing and sustaining ones metabolic rate, than easier exercise done for extended periods. InjuriesOveruse.Enjoyment Just because higher intensity exercise is believed to increase MR more efficiently, it does not necessarily mean that we should abandon all other forms of exercise activity. Many people engage in activities such as cycling, walking, sports, yoga, pilates etc for recreational reasons; for enjoyment, not just to lose weight, and this should always be an important consideration. However, many people unfortunately pursue endurance-type exercises with the sole objective of losing or managing their weight. As mentioned earlier, endurance-type exercise is perhaps not the ideal exercise strategy to managing weight. Also, many endurance exercisers fall into the trap of increasing their exercise durations/distances as a means to compensating for increased eating e.g. Ill run an extra 5 Kms tomorrow to burn off that extra piece of cake. This sometimes becomes a habit, and, in addition to the negative psychological aspects of such an approach, it can also lead to various forms of overuse injuries as well as related postural weaknesses. So, if exercise is to be used effectively as a means to sustaining an elevated MR, a preferred route would be to use higher-intensity exercise strategies, and to also ensure that adequate (ideally optimum) levels of lean muscle mass is maintained. 8 Tips To Help You Get That Raise

By Lee Dobbins Nobody likes going in to ask the boss for a raise, but everyone likes getting one! Unfortunately, sometimes the only way to get the boss to hike your pay is to go in and ask. This can be a bit stressful and awkward, but heres 8 tips you can use to make asking easier and better your chances of getting that well deserved pay increase. 1. Be Prepared. You cant just burst into your bosses office demanding a raise - you need a plan of action. List all the projects youve completed since your last pay increase. Make note of how successful they have been and how theyve increased productivity or saved the company money. If youve accrued any new job skills make a list of those too. Also write down any special skills or knowledge you bring to the job. Find out what the typical raise or salary is for someone in your position. Go in ready with the facts and it will be hard for your boss to argue with you! 2. Always ask for more than you really want. Its the bosses first instinct to negotiate and he or she will inevitable try to talk you down. By asking for a bit more than what you really want then you might end up getting what you really wanted in the first place! If they say yes at your first price then youve got a bonus! 3. Anticipate to negotiate. Maybe three other people got raises this week or your coming is going through a slow down. It may not be feasible to grant your wish for a raise so you need to be flexible on this and have your alternate strategy prepare ahead of time. You may want to try other ways of getting a raise too, such as additional vacation time, employee perks or more time off. All of these can be just as good (if not better!) than an actual amount of money. 4. Select your time wisely. Avoid choosing a Monday or Friday because thats typically when bosses are at their busiest. According to studies, people are most receptive after lunch on Tuesday or Wednesday. At any rate, try to select a time when your boss will have a few spare minutes and wont be distracted with other things. If youre afraid of being interrupted during your request, ask to speak to your supervisor for a few minutes after hours. 5. Dont get upset of yell if your boss objects to your raise at first. After all, you are being paid to do a certain job, and now youre asking for more money to do the same job. Be professional and polite at all times, and listen more than demand. Chances are, if your supervisor doesnt award you a raise, they might hint at what else could be done to earn it. If they dont, dont be afraid to ask what steps would be necessary to prove yourself. 6. Dont threaten to quite if you dont get what you want. He may just call your bluff and let you go! 7. Be confident and get straight to the point. No beating around the bush. Just come right out and state your facts and reasons you think you deserve a raise. If you have Thank You notes from customers or letters from the company praising you for a job well done, bring those to your meeting as well, as theyll help to cement your request and remind your supervisor of your role within the company and its progress. 8. Dont compare yourself to coworkers or talk about them negatively. This will only make you look bad in the bosses eyes. Now, the next time you think you deserve a raise you can gather your facts and go in there confidently and professionally and ask for what you deserve. Lee Dobbins write on many topics.
